I work as a mosaic artist from my studio at home here in a small village in the heart of Wales I welcome public and private commissions, I facilitate workshops for young people and adults to share my passion and enthusiasm for this fascinating medium and regularly exhibit and sell my mosaic work through galleries here in Wales and London.
In 2008 I completed a Masterclass in Byzantine and Roman mosaics in Ravenna, Italy the centre of the Byzantine mosaic world where, using the same amazing and beautiful Italian smalti of the Byzantine mosaic masters, I learnt their traditional skills as practised nearly 2,000 years ago. Studying the form and design of the original 5th and 6th century mosaics still in pristine condition in the basilicas and mausoleums of Ravenna I came away informed, awe inspired and even more passionate about this ancient art form.
My particular interest lies in the adaptability for mosaic as a vehicle to recycle waste materials such as ceramic, pottery, glass etc. and a large percentage of the materials in my projects are recycled. As one of my students recently commented "it is a message particularly appropriate to our times that a thing of long lasting beauty and universal appeal can be made out of a broken tile or chipped and discarded item of crockery." My mosaics are executed painstakingly with each individual piece, or tessera, cut and shaped to size and fixed onto board, fibreglass mesh, concrete or any solid substrate. By the very nature of mosaic no two mosaic projects will be identical but it is possible to replicate designs and colour combinations.
My clients’ commissions have included bathroom and kitchen floors, wall murals and mirrors, garden and patio slabs, business and house name plates, conservatory table tops and portraits. My mosaics may be personalized with names, initials or birth sign and make perfect gifts. Each mosaic is certain to be completely original and totally unique.
